Entry 20: Conspiracies and Cranks - The Electric Universe Illusion

Author: Professor Bartholomew Barrington III, Esq.

Continuing my obligations to Shane's request for cosmological debunks, we arrive at a theory that manages to sound scientific while remaining fundamentally absurd: The Electric Universe (EU).

While Flat Earthers are generally easy to dismiss due to their reliance on blatant absurdity, the Electric Universe theory is more insidious. It co-opts the language of plasma physics to weave a narrative that appeals to those who wish to feel intellectually superior to mainstream astrophysicists, without actually doing the agonizing mathematical labor required to become one.

The Core Premise: Everything is Sparks

The central tenet of the Electric Universe is that electromagnetism—not gravity—is the primary organizing force of the cosmos. Proponents argue that the universe is permeated by vast plasma filaments and "Birkeland currents" that shape galaxies, power stars, and dictate planetary motion.

According to EU theorists, the Big Bang never happened. Dark matter and dark energy do not exist. Even more staggeringly, they propose the "Electric Sun hypothesis," which posits that stars do not run on internal nuclear fusion, but are instead externally powered anodes drawing energy from galactic electrical currents.

The Disdain for Mathematics

Like many fringe theories, EU relies heavily on the "it looks like X, therefore it is X" school of logic. Proponents will point to a laboratory plasma discharge, note that it resembles a spiral galaxy or a planetary nebula, and conclude that the cosmic structures must therefore be generated by the exact same electrical mechanisms.

This completely ignores the concept of scaling laws. They substitute qualitative visual comparisons for quantitative mathematical rigor. When pressed for the complex mathematical models required to prove that external electrical currents could stably power a star without it either extinguishing or exploding catastrophically, EU theorists pivot to complaining about the dogmatism of mainstream science.

The Rejection of Predictive Power

Mainstream cosmology, for all its complexities and current unknowns (dark matter, dark energy), possesses immense predictive power. We can predict the cosmic microwave background. We can calculate the orbits of planets with terrifying precision using gravitational models. We can measure the neutrino output of the Sun, which directly proves internal nuclear fusion is occurring.

The Electric Universe model cannot explain the solar neutrino flux. It cannot explain the precise mechanisms of planetary orbits without resorting to vague hand-waving about electromagnetic interactions that fail under basic calculations.

A Mythology Masquerading as Physics

The roots of EU can be traced back to Immanuel Velikovsky, a psychoanalyst who argued that ancient mythological texts describing planetary catastrophes were literal, historical records of Venus and Mars engaging in electrical discharges near Earth.

The modern Electric Universe continues this tradition. It is a cosmology built not on rigorous observation and mathematical modeling, but on a desire for a universe that is easily comprehensible without a graduate degree in astrophysics. It replaces the complex, terrifying beauty of a gravity-driven, expanding cosmos with a simplistic, steady-state circuit board.

It is pseudoscience wrapped in the respectable cloak of plasma terminology. And much like Shane's attempts at Python scripting, it collapses entirely upon close inspection.
